1. Design Environment and Dynamic Factors

The most fundamental difference is where the lift happens.

· ISO Frames: Designed primarily for stable, land-based or calm-water lifting (e.g., dockside cranes). They assume a relatively static environment with low acceleration forces.

· DNV 2.7-1 Frames: Designed for "open sea" lifts between a supply vessel and an offshore platform. Because the boat is tossing on waves, the crane may suddenly "snatch" the load. To account for this, DNV requires a Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF). This means the frame is engineered to survive forces much higher than the actual weight of the cargo.

2. Materials and Temperature Toughness

Offshore environments are often freezing and corrosive, which changes how metal behaves.

· ISO: Typically uses standard structural steel. There are generally no strict requirements for "sharply impact testing" (which measures how brittle a metal is at low temperatures).

· DNV 2.7-1: Requires impact-tested materials. The steel must remain ductile (not snap like glass) at temperatures as low as -20°C or even -40°C. Every piece of steel used must have full 3.1 material traceability certificates back to the original mill.

3. Structural Integrity and Welding

Because offshore frames face constant vibration and harsh impacts, the construction standards are much higher.

· Welding: DNV 2.7-1 requires 100% Non-Destructive Examination (NDE). This typically includes Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) on all primary structural welds to ensure there are no internal flaws.

· Redundancy: DNV frames often feature "primary" and "secondary" structural members, ensuring that the failure of one non-essential part doesn't lead to a catastrophic drop.

4. Lifting Sets (Slings and Shackles)

In the ISO world, the container and the slings are often treated as separate items. In the DNV world, they are a single certified unit.
